How does TSP to gold IRA rollover work?

Hey folks, I’m looking into rolling over my TSP to a Gold IRA but feeling a little lost on where to start. I’ve heard it can be a good move to protect retirement savings, but the process seems complicated. Any insights or experiences to share?

Welcome to the shiny side! The process isn’t as scary as it sounds. You’ll need to open a self-directed IRA first. Not all custodians handle precious metals, so make sure you find one that does. Then you roll over your funds from the TSP. A little paperwork, but totally worth it!

Eh, I’d pump the brakes. Gold IRAs can be a hedge, but remember they don’t generate dividends or growth like other investments. You’re basically banking on gold’s price going up. Just saying, diversify instead of going all in.

Totally agree with Nimbus99. Gold’s great for stability, but you want balance in your portfolio. That said, M4rtha, if you’re set on this, talk to your TSP administrator first to make sure the funds can be rolled over without penalties. It’s not always straightforward.

Bah, forget diversification, go gold or go home💰
I did my rollover last year. It’s a direct rollover, so you don’t touch the money. TSP sends it straight to the Gold IRA custodian. No tax mess that way.
Easy-peasy. Just double-check the custodian’s fees - some of them are highway robbery.

I’m the odd one out here, I guess, but why gold?
Have you considered sustainable investments or even crypto instead? Gold seems… outdated. I get the safety angle, but there are other ways to hedge against market volatility.

Oh, here we go with the crypto pitch. 🙄 Gold’s been around for thousands of years - crypto’s barely legal in half the world.

if you want something real that you can actually hold in your hand, gold is the way to go.

For those in the military or federal service, TSPs are amazing for low fees, so don’t rush into rolling over without considering the downsides. You’ll lose access to the G Fund, which is one of the safest investments out there. A Gold IRA can’t offer that. Just my two cents.

Anyone here actually own gold from their IRA? I’ve heard horror stories about people rolling over to gold IRAs, only to find out they own “fractional shares” of a bar sitting in some vault. Be sure to ask if you’re getting actual coins or bars, M4rtha. Fractional ownership isn’t the same.

Wow, thanks for all the input, everyone! Didn’t expect so many angles on this. Seems like the key is choosing the right custodian and understanding the costs.

I’ll admit crypto isn’t really my thing, but I appreciate the thought.

Losing the G Fund is something to think about. Lots to consider here…

Sounds like you’re on the right track! If you do decide to go for it, post an update here. Always fun to see someone make the leap to physical assets. Good luck!

Don’t listen to the naysayers—gold’s been solid since the Pharaohs. Welcome to the club when you get there 👑
